 "Grand son's bike" 2010-07-30
By Joan A. Saleh (NEW YORK)

This is a beautiful bike, my grandson just loves it. It was delivered the next day. We had to take it to a bike shop for assembly but it was well worth it.

"Bad Product, Amazon sucks for help" 2010-01-07
By Mikki Hill (Goodyear, AZ)
My son reeceived this bike on the Jan 2nd. The bike broke on Jan 5th. The compression bolt that holds the handle bars down sheered off. If my son would have been doing tricks I might have understood. But we was riding to the store and when we went of the curb the bolt broke and down he went, the product is defective.

When I called the company they told me to return it to the Store since I can't remove bolt out of the middle of the neck of the bike. Amazon is sending me a replacement bike. So we will see if it was only the bolt that was defective or if it is a mongoose problem.

If it wasn't for Amazon the Stars would have been one or less.

 "Son loves it" 2010-01-06
By J. Detmore
Bought this bike for my son (9) for Christmas. He absolutely loves it. I took it to a bike shop and paid them $45 to put it together for me which saved a lot of trouble so I don't know how easy it is to put together. My son said the bike rides great and handles well. The bike seems to be a good weight for a kid who rides it around the block with his friends and doesn't do any major tricks or anything.

"Mongoose Spin, Spinning... At Last & Just in Time" 2009-12-22
By Jennifer D. Macdonald (Dallas TX)
We bought this bike as a gift for Christmas and tried to put it together. The front wheel will not go on. The front fork on the frame was compressed in shipping according to the manufacturer. Really frustrating.

Amazon, being the awesome retailer that they are, is overnighting us a new one, in time for Christmas!

Will update on the outcome of the bike. Glad to be shopping with Amazon. The phone call to get the replacement bike didn't take more than 5 or 10 minutes.

UPDATE:

We got the bike in plenty of time to put together and get it under the tree. My son loves his new bike. This is why I shop at Amazon.com. Even when things go wrong, they get it fixed, fast.

The bike did take my husband a few hours to put together.

 "It's ok" 2009-11-22
By L. Suh
I have to admit, the bike is pretty strong but not exactly strong enough to go on huge dirt jumps or something. The bike is super heavy, around like 35 pounds. Most proper bmx bikes are around 20-27 pounds, with 20 being really good. If you just use this bike for cruising around, then it's a pretty good deal. However, if you are looking into doing tricks and going into serious bmxing I definetley do not reccomend this. The bike is actually pretty cheap though. Again, if you want to go into serious bmxing i reccomend something like an eastern, kink , etc.

"Front Brakes, but not much else" 2009-01-17
By KrisK (Ypsilanti, Michigan)
I purchased this bike to go street and park riding. It seems like it will be able to perform those tasks with little modifications, but there are a lot of parts that are low quality and heavy. The seat is totally ridiculous, unless you want to put it on an exercise bike. Bikes at this price point usually involve some compromises, and this thing has plenty of them. If you are looking for a bmx with front brakes, you have limited choices. Of the bikes with front brakes, this is decent for the price. The component spec is not so good other than that though. There are unsealed bearings everywhere, and lots of parts that are steel instead of aluminum. Overall this bike is probably decent, but you are gonna have to spend more money to have an excellent bike. I would recommend the Eastern Metalhead over this bike if you can afford it.

"Good Bike, Bad Crank and Pedals" 2009-07-13
By Vadim Dumbrava (Spokane, WA)
When i recieved my bike, i assemble it and rode it the same day. Well by the end of the day the plastic pedals broke! I went and bought new ones but then the next couple of days the crank grooves for the pedals broke!! I bought a new crank, and another set of pedals!

PROS: Looks great; easy to pop a wheelie

CONS: Brakes are BAD! The rims are painted = no grip for brakes.; Pedals are bad; handle bars need alot of getting used to; too expensive for this type of quality.

Just an honest opinion.

"babyage seller unreliable Only 1 star- would be 0 if i could" 2008-12-18
By M. Galbraith (tx)
Placed order for this bike on Dec. 7th. supposed to be delivered no later than 19th.rec'd email saying shipping had been delayed,it would ship around the 13th and we would receive an email confirmation of shipping. By the 16th, we had not rec'd an email so attempted to call customer service line. For 3-4 hours the line was busy. When finally connected,I waited 45 minutes before speaking with a representative, who emailed for another representative to contact me(which I have not been contacted)because she was only able to inform me that the item had not shipped and that it might ship in 3 to 5 days. On the 17th, rec'd email from amazon saying it has not shipped. I attempted to call customer service all day and have only gotten a busy signal. Still have not rec'd a response of any kind from babyage. Item still hasnt shipped. Was to be Christmas gift. Amazon.com shows babyage has instock with 4-5 day process. If bike is in stock "as advertised", why the delay? be wary.

 "Seller tells lies" 2008-12-13
By Tom Zelly (Miami, Fl)
This seller is not reliable. I ordered this bike for my son for Christmas. The order stated that it would be delivered between Dec 10 and Dec 15. I called, a week after I ordered, to check the status of my order, because I had not heard from them, and they changed the date to Dec 19. I am hoping that they deliver but the delay and change of date has me worried. The product description says that the bike is "In Stock", if this is true what is the delay?

 "Great bike!" 2008-01-03
By Shannon M. Harrell (Mechanicsville, VA)
Our son loves his new bike. He loves the graphics and the bright color, but especially the trick bars on the wheels. He plans to learn to do some tricks; he's experimenting already. My husband wishes there were brakes on the bike you utilize with the pedals, but it is understandable with the trick bars that you need hand brakes. The only thing we would change is to have both types of brakes.

 "Disappointed!" 2009-09-02
By Tuan Nguyen (Houston)
I'm 40yrs old and bought this bike for my 8yr old. Growing up, I remember being in love with Mongoose bikes. Unfortunately, the Mongoose bikes of today are nothing like they used to be.

The bike came with missing parts ( misc bolts, screw to fasten the seat); the owner manual is NOT specific to the bike model; calls to customer service were answered by a call center person who is NOT at all familair with the bike.

I guess this is the trade-off we must pay for having stuff manufactured cheaply overseas (China).

 "Great Bike..." 2009-03-19
By Monica Fiallo (Miramar, FL Florida United States)
We bought this bike for our 11 year old son, even though the box states from 6-11 years old. I think it would be a bit large for a 6 year old. This bike seems to be more appropriate for 9-15 year olds. The bike has a great graphic design on the middle section. It can hold 200 pounds. I think this is a great buy for a preteen and teenagers. It also had the extra bars for the ride-ons.

 "Assembly problems" 2008-08-06
By Michelle M. Marciniec (Orange County, CA)
Unless you are mechanically handy, do not buy a bike in a box. Also, the wrong pedals were sent in this box apparently they were 1/2" instead of 3/8" threads. I found this out when I went to pay $40 to have this bike assembled. We like the bike OK, but it cost quite a bit to have assembled and the pedals were wrong.

About mongoose
In 1974, BMX Products, Inc., later to be known as mongoose Bicycles, launched from a humble garage. The first of its kind, the BMX bicycle was named after bicycle motocross and was designed to fit the needs of the rough-and-tumble dirt-racing pastime that took its toll on wheels and bicycles. The heavy-duty, one-piece cast-aluminum mongoose Motomag wheel was soon born, and it was the first competition-ready BMX bicycle available. Skip Hess, while in Australia pursuing his motor sports passion, came into contact with a strange and unusual cat-size animal--the mongoose. Known for its passive nature while unprovoked, yet vicious and aggressive enough to kill a threatening Cobra twice its size, the mongoose impressed Hess, who quickly registered the mongoose trademark for his new bicycle racing frame.

The Expert BMX bicycle model, which is still a cornerstone of the mongoose BMX line today, was introduced in 1980. Shortly after, mongoose captured the first ever ABA National #1 Cruiser Title. Previously known for the 20-inch bicycle, this title signaled the re-direction of mongoose bicycles to larger-wheeled, adult-sized models. Several years later, mongoose continues to dominate the cruiser racing circuit with six National No. 1 Cruiser titles, leading to the introduction of adult-sized mongoose all-terrain bicycles (ATBs).

In 1992, mongoose pioneered the full-suspension market with the introduction of the Amplifier. This design is still the most-copied suspension design in the market. Several year later, mongoose launched the Newman adult bicycle frame, which is proven to be 15% stronger than any other bike frame in the market. The design, while functionally sound, also raised eyebrows because of its distinctive look.

In the next few years, mongoose increased its marketing focus to dominate the bicycle industry, and more important, extend beyond it. The mongoose brand marketing initiative makes more than 100 million impressions. mongoose’s brand awareness increased by over 130% in 1999 and solidifies the No. 2 market share position in units and dollars. mongoose was acquired by Pacific Cycle, LLC, and continues to grow and prosper with more than 40 models of BMX, mountain, trail, freestyle, jumping, comfort, road, and cyclocross bikes.

Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide
Finding the Right Bike
To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:

The Right Ride
In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:

  • Road and Racing Bikes--As a general rule, road and racing are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
  • Mountain Bikes--With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
  • Comfort/Cruiser Bikes--For tooling around on bike paths, light trails, or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price
A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.

  • Entry-level--You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
  • Mid-range--Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the "sweet spot." Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
  • High-end--Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultralightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size
Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:

  • Stand-over Height--To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want three to five inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between one and two inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have two to four inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
  • Top Tube Length--You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half, and subtract six inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about two inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
  • Bikes for Women--Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube and many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories
When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:

  • Helmet (this is a must!)
  • Seat pack
  • Lock
  • Hydration pack, or water bottle and bottle cage
  • Spare tubes
  • Portable bike pump
  • Gloves
